This was a record release party for Phil Lesh's album "There And Back Again". The early and late show required seperate tickets.
I scrubbed a ton of nearby loud claps (mostly from the 1st set): S1T1 (37 claps), S1T2(15), S1T3(33), S1T4(24), S1T5(9), S1T6(54), S1T7(50), S1T8(40), S1T9(14), S1T10(10), S1T12(10), S2T3(8), S2T4(7), S2T6(22), S2T9(3), S2T15(10).
I also minimized a few bursts of feedback using spectrum analysis and paragraphic EQ: S2T7 - 1 burst @ 5K, S2T8 - 1 burst @ 12k, S2T11 - 2 bursts @ (forgot to note), S2T16 - 1 burst @ 7890k
Taper notes:
For BARN127, I decided it was time to release some Phil and Friends music. When I pulled this out for a transfer last November, I had just been to see the latest post-Garcia Dead incarnation, Furthur, with Bobby and Phil, and while it was fun, it all seemed a bit too rehearsed and planned. And I got to thinking how that was quite the opposite of what I'd experienced with Phil and Friends (at times), which was freewheeling and had lots of jams built in. And my mind wandered back to this show in particular, which was an album release party for Phil's album at Irving Plaza, a very small venue here in NYC that holds about 1000 people. I used to really like going to this place (though it hasn't been hosting much of interest lately, I used to see a TON of shows at Irving), so couldn't believe my luck when I had the chance to see Phil Lesh play up close and personal in such an intimate setting.
I can remember the POWER of his playing onstage, and the "throw caution to the wind" attitude the band of spectacular musicians had. Of course, this lineup was filled with amazing players -- Warren Haynes of Govt Mule and the Allman Brothers & Jimmy Herring (previously of the Aquarium Rescue Unit, sometime Allman Brother, eventual Widespread Panic replacement guitarist), the amazing John Molo on drums, and Rob Baracco on keys. In particular, the "St. Stephen" -> "The Eleven" and the deep Grateful Dead chestnut "Mason's Children" from the early show, and all of the craziness going in and out of "Viola Lee Blues" in the late show are worth the cost of admission alone. The "Liberty" encore from the early set (sung by Barraco) is also fun. "Passenger", a long-forgotten Grateful Dead rarity totally rocks out for the late show encore. A lot of the setlist from this night spotlights the "There And Back" album material that this show was celebrating, and unfortunately a lot of the tunes from the album are quite forgettable -- thereby making a good bit of this show also quite forgettable (though the Warren-penned "Patchwork Quilt" and "The Real Thing" are both keepers).
Anyway, this spectacular sounding recording, made with my bass-loving Neumanns from the sweet spot in a killer-sounding small venue is a treat for your ears. Enjoy lots of bass "in your face" from Phil Lesh -- so all of you dwellers in the Phil Zone should get your fill here. :)
Enjoy!
Scott
